Newsletter Issue #101

Knowledge is power . ARCON Welding is pleased to share information and knowledge with our customers, potential customers and our distributors. This Bi-monthly publication features new products, Workhorse welders used in various applications, active distributors, and technical information to include questions and answers. This publication is designed to offer a wide array of knowledge and topics, some of which we hope you will find useful. Please forward this Newsletter to anyone else in your organization that could use this information. ARCON Welding’s aim is to provide useful solutions and information, not to be intrusive and not to waste your time. WHAT’S NEW AT ARCON WELDING?
In addition to his sales and customer support duties, George Bell is designing advertisements, submitting editorials for trade magazines and is now publishing this E-publication. It is available at your request. George is anxious to hear about your ideas, questions and concerns.

ARCON’S FEATURED WELDER
The Workhorse Tigweld 300ST is a remarkable TIG/Stick welding machine which, unlike high-frequency arc start machines, does not cause radio interference.  This interference can affect communication systems such as computers, cell phones and televisions .This welder was specifically designed for demanding TIG welding where the tungsten (wolfram) isn’t allowed to touch the base metal and contaminate the weld. This new Workhorse is a "no-nonsense", cost-effective machine that uses capacitor discharge single pulse arc starting. The Tigweld 300ST offers TIG and Stick welding current from 10 to 300 Amps @60% Duty Cycle in two current ranges. The new machine is available for all domestic and international standard single input voltages.

This little powerhouse offers big benefits! It produces a powerful spark that penetrates through painted and rusty surfaces. It features a built-in gas valve and adjustable gas pre-flow and post-flow control. The arc is easy to strike with the spark reaching a half-inch distance in argon gas. The 300ST’s cooling fan doesn’t operate at less than 100Amps. This greatly reduces the intake of dust into the weld. The Tigweld 300ST’s standard carbon arc gouging protection eliminates harmful currents caused during arc gouging. The machine has Smart Surge Control that reduces weld puddle agitation. This eliminates a major cause of slag inclusions in the weld.

The Tigweld 300ST incorporates constant-arc power, which means less dependency on a steady hand to achieve a great weld. The constant-arc power makes "burn through" almost impossible when increasing the arc length or welding thin material. This means that you can forget about holding a constant arc length, making TIG welding much easier .All of the Workhorse family of inverter type welders offer unique features not found on other brands. These include the SCR Inverter, constant-arc power, and amazing durability .

The SCR inverter design is used in all Workhorse welders. Research indicated SCR inverter failures are far less than IGBT inverters. In field-testing, The Workhorse design proved to be 100 times more durable in welding applications! This multiplies the life of the machine and greatly reduces costly downtime. The rugged Workhorse fiberglass enclosure handles tough work environments and "dragging skids" underneath are standard. This 19.5" long x 17.9" high x 10.5" wide machine stores and stacks easily. ARCON offers a Seahorse corrosion-resistant version for harsh environments. Although ARCON’s welders are considered to be superior in handling over-voltages and spikes, the Warhorse option is available for excessive voltage surges and spikes in "dirty voltage" environments. All ARCON welders comply with UL 551 and equivalent CE/IEC60974-1 safety standards and come with Arcon Welding’s three-year limited warranty. MEET OUR DISTRIBUTORS
ARCON was pleased to be an exhibitor at Lee’s Gas Supplies, Inc. in Elkridge and Baltimore Maryland on May 14 th and 15 th . The food and Kettle Corn was delicious (catered by The Terrible Grill) and the weather was perfect for the open house. Lee’s Gas Supplies is owned by Valley National Gases and has been serving the Baltimore metropolitan area since1947. Lee’s supplies compressed and liquid gases, dry ice and welding equipment and supplies. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable at Lee’s, and ARCON is especially grateful to Account Manager Chris Binaut for his assistance that enabled us to demonstrate both the Arc-Starter TIG and Stud welding machines. Those in attendance found the day informative and many showed great interest in the equipment on display. Customers in the Baltimore Maryland area can contact Lee’s Gas Supplies at 410 631-7040 or in the Elkridge area at 410-799-1114.

APPLICATIONS AND EQUIPMENT
USING THE WORKHORSE STICK/TIG WELDER IN THE SHIPYARD

ARCON has many Workhorse 300S Stick/TIG welders being used to weld aluminum in various shipyards using voltage-sensing wire feeders. 3/64" aluminum wire can be used with wire feeders such as Miller’s Suitcase 8VS or Lincoln’s LN-25 with a suitable MIG gun. The guns we hear the most about are Tweco’s M412-4535 and M415-4535. Bill Strate of Strate Welding in Jacksonville Florida says this is an ideal setup to weld "hot and fast, making as few passes as possible".

ASK THE TECH

Question: Some advertising states that higher inverter frequency equals smoother welding. Is this true?

Answer: The theory behind this is that the ripple in power caused by the inverter frequency will make the weld puddle temperature change. The current in the arc has a higher ripple frequency with a higher inverter frequency, which would cause less temperature variation.

The fact is that the weld puddle has a thermal time constant of approximately one-second. The Workhorse has an inverter frequency of 2,000 HZ corresponding to 0.0005 second, which makes its variation 20,000 times faster than the weld puddle’s thermal constant.
